Advisory Services at the Airport
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) certifies weather observers based on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) criteria. The Truckee Tahoe Airport currently has 10 employees who have completed NOAA certification who provide observations of visibility, wind speed and direction, cloud type, height, obscuration, and precipitation every hour and disseminate the information to a national database. When the airport is closed, the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) transmits this data via the NADIN network. Having staff trained in weather monitoring improves safety for pilots flying into the Truckee area in need of the most up to date weather information.
