EAA Awards 3 Oshkosh Scholarships

Sierra Sun Article: The Truckee Chapter 1073 of the Experimental Aircraft Association is proud to announce the awarding of three scholarships to local Young Eagles to attend EAA’s Air Academy this summer at Oshkosh, Wis.

Keely Hoyt, of Truckee, will attend the Advanced Air Academy for 16- to 18-year-olds. Kestrel Sura, of Kings Beach, and Hayden Ruttenberg, of Truckee, will attend the Basic Air Academy for 14- to 15-year-olds.

Unforgettable aviation memories and new friends await middle and high school-aged students every summer with EAA’s week long Air Academy camps designed to introduce young people to the aviation world.

Camp participants explore aviation through technical and learning classrooms as well as hands-on experiences from knowledgeable instructors and mentors. They’ll gain life skills to apply to everyday life and discover the unlimited opportunities a career in aviation presents.

EAA started the Young Eagles program in 1992 with the goal of introducing one million youths eight through 17 to aviation by giving them free airplane rides.

Volunteer pilots across the nation and internationally have flown nearly two million Young Eagles since then, and the Truckee chapter has flown over 3,300 in that time.

The next Young Eagles rally will occur the day after the July 9 Truckee Tahoe Air Show & Family Festival.

Each local age-eligible Young Eagle will be given a scholarship application instruction sheet for the 2017 Air Academy camps following their flight. “Local” includes the Truckee Tahoe Airport District boundaries and Incline Village.
