Airport Board approves ADS-B Ground Station Installation!

Over 50 District constituents attended the June 26, 2019 board meeting to discuss the merits of installing an Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) system to provide air traffic coverage in the Lake Tahoe - Sierra regional airspace.

The Board voted 5-0 in favor of funding 2 ADS-B ground stations for ~$1M. One station will be located at KTRK and the other at KTVL (South Lake Tahoe Airport). The stations will provide full ADS-B coverage in both Martis Valley and the Lake Tahoe basin.

FAA licensed prime-contractor Harris Corporation will install the ground stations. Work is expected to be completed by late spring 2020.

Once completed the system will improve aviation safety and efficiency, not only for pilots and their passengers, but also for community members and local and national air traffic controllers. The system is expected to give local air traffic controllers better tools to reduce neighborhood overflights with increased control of flight paths.
