Multi-Agency Aerial GIS Mapping

Jun 25, 2021

Aerial mapping work is scheduled to begin next week in the Truckee Tahoe region.

Truckee Tahoe Airport District along with the Town of Truckee, Truckee Donner Public Utility District, Truckee Sanitary District, North Tahoe Public Utility District, Tahoe City Public Utility District, Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency, and Northstar Community Services District have partnered to acquire updated engineering quality aerial orthophotography and LiDAR data.  The region for mapping consists of 180 square miles of heavily treed Sierra Nevada mountains.  Elevation changes range from 5,000 to 10,000 feet.

The project will obtain GIS data of the highest quality for use in a variety of critical applications that support the Truckee Tahoe region.  Typical applications include engineering design for water, sewer, electric, fiber optics, drainage, and road improvement, development of utility profiles, improved location of infrastructure data, collection of GIS features for buildings, pavement, and water bodies, 3D viewsheds, and Environmental Impact Assessments and vegetation management.

Digital Mapping Inc (DMI) based in Huntington Beach was awarded the contract and will fly a grid to capture the data using digital mapping cameras and LiDAR, light detection and ranging equipment.  Flights will commence in early July (weather dependent) and will be conducted in a piston twin Piper Navajo aircraft.  Competitive pricing, excellent qualifications and recent work in Big Bear secured the contract for DMI.

Be on the lookout for the white twin engine Navajo overhead performing this vital work for the benefit of the community at large.
