Aviation Alphabet
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) developed the current phonetic alphabet system in the 1950's in order to standardize nomenclature and avoid radio communication misunderstandings. It is used internationally today in both civilian and military applications for such aviation related broadcasts as airport taxiways, airport identifier codes and aircraft tail numbers. Fun exercise: Have your kids spell their name using the Pilot's Alphabet!
